Intro

The Institute of Meteorology and Geophysics in Innsbruck runs a meteorological station (Observatory) which is part of a network of stations of the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG), Vienna.

According to the instructions of the ZAMG the observers collect different meteorological parameters at 7 am, 2pm and 7 pm submitting them to the regional office of ZAMG at Innsbruck airport, daily.

Furthermore the Observatory uses an automatic data logger documenting the single meteorological parameters with a resolution of 1 minute.

Since 1971 the Observatory is located at the present address in Schöpfstraße 45 (Innsbruck) in a small park with only a few buildings in the surrounding. Earlier locations were situated closer to the city centre. The first location dates from 1777 which means that our Observatory in Innsbruck is one of the eldest meteorological observatories in Central Europe.

In many domains of research and teaching the collected data are very useful and our students are urged to collect the basic meteorological data themselves within the daily weather prediction service which is part of the synoptic training.

For numerous diploma theses and dissertations time series of these meteorological data have been used and discussed in different topics, regarding also the actual climatic change problems.
